Skin Must-Haves For Your Summer Travel Plans: Red Light Therapy, Summer Plans

Passports, beach days, bikinis, and balmy evenings are all hallmarks of the summer season, but unfortunately, so is dry skin, sun damage, and changes in skin texture. Below, we explore how to protect our skin throughout the summer months to prevent facing a winter of damage control to repair damaged skin.

FAQ

Q: How to Prepare Your Skin For Travel?

A: Before every flight or long journey, make sure to cleanse, tone, and moisturize your skin. Protection is key to preventing moisture loss throughout the flight. Always travel with a hypochlorous acid spray to prevent acne breakouts. 'The only time I break out is on a flight,' explains Claire, digital marketing manager at Project E Beauty. But regularly applying hypochlorous to my face and hands has been a real lifesaver during the summer season, when I travel far more.  'It's really gentle on the skin and prevents tight skin throughout even the longest travel days'

Q: What Are The Best Skincare Tips When Travelling?

A:

  • Wear SPF every day, reapply at least every two hours, and after swimming when spending time outdoors.
  • Double cleanse every night; travel and hot temperatures may lead to overactive sebaceous glands and increased sweating, causing clogged pores and breakouts. Use a cleansing brush every other night while sweating, applying sunscreen, etc.
  • Use a thick, hydrating moisturiser every morning and night to prevent moisture loss.
  • Use hyaluronic acid serum twice per day.
  • Switch your LED mask to the morning. There is some emerging evidence that using an LED mask before sun exposure can prevent UV damage throughout the day. They also repair any damage caused by harmful UV. If you usually use your LED mask at night, try switching to a morning session while on holiday.
  • Do not wear make-up on your flight to prevent breakouts.
  • Use a sheet mask directly after your flight to prevent further water loss and enhance skin hydration.
  • Exfoliate twice per week while travelling.
  • Drink 2L+ of water per day (especially if enjoying some holiday cocktails).
  • Choose sugar-free holiday drinks where possible.

Other Skin Care Tips For Summer Months and Beyond

The Best Diet For Skincare

Skin health and diet are inextricably linked; sticking to a healthy, Mediterranean-style diet, particularly during the summer months, can help enhance glowing skin and offset skin damage. Focus on antioxidant-rich foods such as colorful vegetables, citrus fruit, leafy greens, fatty fish, green tea, nuts, healthy proteins, and lots of water.

Lipcare

The lips are susceptible to the effects of sun damage and collagen loss, and dryness. Extend your skincare to the lips, especially your SPF. Many nourishing lip balms now come with SPF, so they are perfect for keeping your lips both nourished and protected. For extra points, use an LED device on the lips to keep them looking plump throughout the summer. The Project E Beauty LumaLux Face comes with an integrated lip feature, unlike many other masks on the market, offsetting the need to invest in a lip-specific LED device.

Check Your Moles

After summer sun and summer fun, it is always a good idea to book your skin check and stay on top of any skin changes. Your dermatologist can offer personalized advice based on your skin type and any sun safety habits you may want to adopt, such as staying in the shade or covering certain moles altogether during sun exposure.

Switch to Blue Light

Even if you only use the blue light therapy mode on your LED mask for the occasional breakout, summer might be the time to incorporate the blue light setting a bit more regularly. As mentioned, the sun, increased sweating, and higher temperatures can lead to an overproduction of oil from sebaceous glands to increase the likelihood of breakouts. Blue light therapy is anti-bacterial, it regulates oil production from the sebaceous glands, and moderates inflammation and redness that may be characteristic of summer skin woes. Incorporating 1-2 blue light sessions per week is a preventative way to manage summer breakouts and irritation, helping to keep your skin clean, calm, and clear all season long.
